The Maize Value chain in Uganda

The Maize Value chain in Uganda

Key Findings

Maize production is characterized by low input use and thus low productivity, dependency on rain and low mechanization. Over the past decade, maize production has increased at an annual average rate of 9.58%, second highest in the region after Rwanda and it is projected to increase by 272% by 2030. Increase in production has been attributed more to expansion in production area than productivity with average yields not exceeding 2.5MT/Ha and a yield gap of 71% experienced.Maize is the most important grain in Uganda, produced by about 1.8 million farmers who are mostly smallholders allocating less than 2 Ha to maize production for household consumption and food security purposes as well as a source of income.
