Buginyanya ZARDI champions bio fertilizer for sustainable farming

Piloted in 2021 under the R4iCSA (Reduce, Reuse and Recycle Rice Initiative for Climate Smart Agriculture) Kilimo Trust project funded by IKEA Foundation, BugiZARDI worked with various partners to recycle rice straw into vermicompost which can be used to improve soil health and hence, increase yield of crops.

The pilot sites were established at Buginyanya main station in Bulambuli, Magola in Tororo, Doho in Butaleja, Ngenge in Kween and at Atari in Kween district. Unlike chemical fertilisers, Mr. Etiang explained that vermicompost improves soil structure and contributes to sequestering carbon back into the soil. This makes it a more suitable option for farmers in this era of climate change.
