The East Africa Youth Inclusion Program (EAYIP) is a five-year program implemented by Heifer International, co-created with the MasterCard Foundation (MCF) based on Heifer’s East Africa Dairy Development (EADD) hub model. Kilimo Trust was commissioned to undertake a commodity scoping study in Uganda with an aim of identifying the agricultural value chains and activities youth are engaged in as well as those they would prefer to engage in. The outcome of the commodity scoping study will inform the more detailed value chain studies to be undertaken.
The commodity scoping study set out to profile the environment that influences youth involvement in agriculture, to establish the enterprises and value chains that the youth are involved in, to identify the incentives for and challenges that constrain youth inclusion in agriculture and to determine what is required to enhance youth participation in agriculture. A desk research was conducted to identify secondary data existing relevant to youth in Uganda. This was supplemented by primary data collection in the districts of Amuria, Bugiri, Kiboga, Luwero, Ngora and Wakiso. A total of 408 youth interviews, 72 key informants and 12 focus group discussions were conducted in six districts mentioned above.Uganda has one of the fastest growing populations in the world with an annual growth rate of 3.2% (UBOS, 2014) and a current population of 34.6million (UBOS, 2016), 20.6% of which are between 15 and 24 years (UBOS, 2016). This makes Uganda one of the countries with the youngest population in the world. The study districts are largely rural with over 65% of the population in rural areas which justifies why agriculture is the major source of livelihood.
