East African Youth Inclusion Program (EAYIP)

Overview:

EAYIP is a five-year (2016 - 2021) co-created project by Heifer International and the MasterCard Foundation (MCF). The project aims to improve the livelihoods of youth by creating jobs and entrepreneurship opportunities of 25,000 economically disadvantaged young men and women (ages 15-24) in Uganda and Tanzania.  Based on Heifer’s East Africa Dairy Development (EADD) hub model, it will create youth owned and managed businesses as well as employment opportunities around hubs in dairy and other agricultural value chains. Kilimo Trust is one of the service providers for the project responsible for the market and value chain studies, policy analysis and youth advocacy.

Districts of Implementation:

Uganda: Amuria, Ngora, Bugiri, Kiboga, Wakiso and Luwero.

Tanzania: Mbeya Rural, Rungwe and Busokelo, Mbozi, Njombe town council, Njombe district council, Wangin’gombe, Mafinga, Mufindi, Iringa district council and Kilolo.

Project goal:

The program seeks to:

  1. Equip youth with the necessary skills to establish businesses around the hub or seek employment in hub-related agribusinesses.
  2. Facilitate access to finance for young entrepreneurs to start or expand businesses.
  3. Enhance the enabling environment to increase youth participation in agribusiness.
  4. Replicate the hub model replicated new value chains supporting young men and women.

What has been achieved so far:

  •      Youth in Agriculture Commodity Scoping Studies for Tanzania and Uganda.
  •      Value Chain Analysis Studies for Poultry, Potato and Maize in Tanzania; Maize and Poultry in Uganda.
  •      Policy Analysis on issues hindering youth in Agriculture in Uganda – Policy briefs on Access to Finance, Inputs and Land.
  •      Legal Framework analysis for Youth in Agriculture in Uganda.
  •      Developed Advocacy Toolkit for Trainers.
  •      Civil Society mapping to support youth advocacy in Uganda.
  •      Trained youth advocacy champions and Civil Society Organisations in Uganda implementation Districts.
  •      Agricultural Finance Policy Study in Uganda – Agricultural Youth Financing Mechanism Study Report and Policy Brief.
