In Rubavu District, Kilimo Trust through its project, the Good Food for Cities (GFC) recently held an inspiring competition to promote sustainable farming practices.
The main goal of the competition is to promote sustainable production of healthy and nutritious foods through regenerative agricultural practices and fostering inclusive markets and community engagement in the district.
Cooperatives such as COFAR, KOTIBANYA, ICYEREKEZO, KAIDU, and KOZAI, alongside households, women-led initiatives, youth, farmers promoters, farmers with disabilities, and innovators, showcased their innovations.
Evaluated on-site, participants demonstrated achievements in areas like kitchen gardens, composting, and innovative regenerative agriculture techniques such as crop rotation, recycling and reuse of household’s waste, mulching, proper and timely use of inputs. Winners were selected based on their exemplary practices, considering factors such as the adoption of regenerative practices, access to markets and inputs, financial service utilization, and innovation in sustainable agriculture.
The forthcoming award ceremony promises to spotlight these achievements and inspire continued excellence in promoting healthy, nutritious food production. During the ceremony, 61 winners will be rewarded across various categories: the Best Cooperative, Best Farmer, Best Woman Farmer, Best Youth Farmer, People with Disability, Farmer Promoter, and Best Innovator Farmer in each cooperative. Each category will have two winners, a first and second place, the Best Cooperative, making a total of 61 winners.
