Analysis of Demand and Value Chains of Sweet Potato Sub-Sector in Uganda

Analysis of Demand and Value Chains of Sweet Potato Sub-Sector in Uganda

Key Findings

In October 2012 Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation commissioned Kilimo Trust to investigate how developing markets for sweet potatoes and yams and their processed products would contribute to upgrading of relevant value chains in Tanzania and Uganda. The assessment was designed to focus on how such a development will positively impact low-income earners in both urban and rural areas with respect to food/nutrition security; enhanced incomes and creation of wealth for producers and other operators along the value chain. Findings from the assessment are presented in four separate volumes. Volume 1 covers Demand Analysis (DA) for sweet potatoes in the entire East Africa Community. Volume 2 presents findings from the Value Chain Analysis (VCA) for sweet potatoes in Tanzania, Volume 3 presents findings from the Value Chain Analysis (VCA) for sweet potatoes in Uganda while Volume 4 presents a combined report on the Demand and Value Chain Analysis for yams grown in Uganda and Tanzania. Therefore, this Volume 3 presents the findings on the Value Chain Analysis (VCA) for sweet potatoes in Uganda, quantifying the benefits to value chain actors in terms of incomes, profits, and/or return on investment.
