Project Summary

The East Africa Youth Inclusion Program (EAYIP) is a five-year program (2016 -2021) implemented by Heifer International and co-created with the MasterCard Foundation (MCF) based on Heifer’s East Africa Dairy Development (EADD) hub model. The program aims to improve the livelihoods of 25,000 economically disadvantaged young men and women (aged 15-24years) in Uganda and Tanzania by creating jobs and entrepreneurship opportunities. This will be done by providing youth with a value proposition that will address barriers to full access to employment and enterprise development opportunities within agricultural value chains.

The strategic objectives of the project are to:
  1. Equip youth with the necessary skills to establish businesses around the hub or seek employment in hub-related agribusinesses;
  2. Facilitate access to finance for young entrepreneurs to start or expand businesses;
  3. Enhance Enabling environment to increase youth participation in agribusiness; and
  4. Replicate hub model in new value chains supporting young men and women.

Kilimo Trust was commissioned to undertake research, value chain studies, policy analysis to guide implementation of the program as well as conduct advocacy training for the project implementers.

Overall achievements to date by Kilimo Trust under EAYIP are:
  1. 2 Commodity Scoping Reports for Tanzania and Uganda produced to guide the selection of value chains and project implementation.
  2. 5 Value chain studies published and disseminated to 540 stakeholders
    1. Tanzania: Poultry, maize and Potato
    2. Uganda: Poultry and Maize
    3. Value Chain Posters in English and Luganda produced.
  3. 3 policy briefs (on finance, land and inputs access by youth) and policy report published and disseminated to 200 stakeholders in Uganda (from sub counties to Parliament)
  4. 1 policy advocacy tool kit developed. This was in-turn used to train 15 Heifer Staff on advocacy
