Project Summary

The Regional East Africa Community Trade in Staples Project-II (REACTS-II) project is a 3 years’ flagship regional project that will support small holder farming households and other value chain actors (SMEs) across the three EAC countries (Uganda, Kenya and Rwanda), to take advantage of structured national, regional and opportunistic international markets for agricultural products. REACTS-II commenced on 1st April 2018 and ends on 31st March 2021. The project is funded by AGRA (US$ 1,399,974) and implemented by Kilimo Trust.

REACTS-II interventions focus on the maize value chain in Uganda; Pulses in Kenya, Uganda and Rwanda; Rice in Rwanda and Potatoes in Kenya.

The project goal is to increase incomes by 20% for 315,795 small holder farming households (105,265 direct and 210,530 indirect beneficiaries) and 5% for other value chain actors (SMEs). This will be pursued through two objectives:

  1. Strengthen and expand access to input and output markets, and
  2. Improve value chain coordination efficiency in the maize, rice, potatoes and pulses value chains
Expected Results
  • 105,265 small holder farming households reached by the project
  • US$ 2,600,000 new public or private sector investment in the agriculture sector leveraged by REACTS implementation
  • 30 business linkages established between buyers and suppliers of produce
  • 120,000MT of target crops traded nationally and across borders
  • 6,529MT of inputs accessed by SHFs
  • 6 market assessment reports developed and disseminated
  • 50,000 SHFs and SMEs trained on identified gaps to enhance profitability of enterprises
  • US$ 1,050,000 of finances accessed/leveraged by VCAs from financial institutions
  • 18 youth-owned enterprises supported along focus value chains
  • 200 youths providing technological services in business consortia
  • 18 women owned/led SMEs receiving project support
Overall Project Achievements so far
  • 20,734 SHFs have benefitted from at least one intervention provided by REACTS-II
  • US$ 286,958 have been leveraged from public and private sector
  • 33 business linkages have been established between buyers and suppliers of produce
  • 17,762MT of produce valued at US$ 6,610,758 has been traded nationally and regionally
  • 418MT of inputs have been accessed by SHFs
  • 2 market assessment reports developed and disseminated
  • 6,337 SHFs trained on financial literacy, good post-harvest handling, business skills
  • 13,077 SHFs have accessed BDS (finance and technologies)
  • US$ 67,568 accessed by SHFs from financial institutions
  • 8 women owned/led SMEs supported by the project
  • 9 youth owned enterprises supported along focus value chains
  • 145 youth engaged by the project providing technological services in business consortia
