|The first trade of beans under BEST-EAC Phase 1 has been realized. In Rwanda, 150MT of mixed beans worth US$ 63,000 were supplied to Sarura Commodities Ltd and farmers have already received their payment. However this was short of the expected volumes that had been agreed upon during the strategic planning meeting held between Sarura
||Commodities Ltd and Farmers’ Business Organizations (FBOs) in December 2015. This was due to the fact that September – January is a short rain/minor season for beans in the country.
During this period, due to lower volumes produced, most farmers prefer keeping beans for home consumption
||resulting in their scarcity and higher prices in the market.
On the other hand, two seed multiplication cooperatives were linked to Harvest Plus i.e. Duhurizehamwe Mugera which bought 600Kg and Abishyizehamwe Ruhunde which bought 150Kg of Iron Fortified bean seed. About 30 MT of seed are expected to be bulked in July-August, 2016.
